DPS Receives Safety Grant
August 31, 2010
The Tennessee Municipal League (TML) recently awarded the City of Waverly Department of Public Safety its Safety Partners Grant. The $1,500 matching grant is used to assist with the purchase of safety related equipment. The grant will be used to purchase high visibility traffic vests, rain gear, and flashlights for personnel, as well as an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
Waverly Police Officers carry AED’s in their patrol units while on duty and respond to emergency medical calls along with EMS. The AED’s have proven their value in the past during medical emergencies in Waverly, credited for at least 2 lives being saved. “The AED’s have saved lives in the past, and this additional one will help us deploy them more efficiently. This will allow more of our officers to have them available during routine patrol and special events” added Chief David Daniel.
The traffic vests and jackets will help make officers more visible when working traffic crashes and other problems on the roadway. The new vests will be fully compliant with new federal safety guidelines for high visibility clothing, and should enhance officer safety on the roadway.
TML is the city’s liability insurance carrier and offers the grant as a way to enhance employee safety.
